Final Project

David Tse(dntse@stanford.edu) Winter 2016-2017

Course Project

  • You will read a set of papers on a topic and give a poster presentation about that topic. The topic should be a contribution to information theory or a substantial application of information theory to other fields. Your poster should not be just a regurgitation of the papers but should reveal a good understanding of the contribution of the papers to the literature as well as their potential limitations. For example, the poster can include some nicely worked out examples, analytical or simulations. Doing something novel would be a big plus!

  • We will provide a list of suggested topics and papers, but students are also welcomed to have their own suggestions. The topic and the papers should be chosen in consultation with the course instructor and assistants.

  • Students should team up in triplets for project.

  • A one-page proposal is due on Thursday March 2nd, 5pm.

  • The poster presentation is on Thursday March 23rd in Packard Atrium on the final exam slot for this course.

  • A final report, including at most 4 pages one column NIPS format, is due at noon on Friday March 24th.

Poster Presentation:

  • There will be two poster sessions on March 23rd in Packard Atrium, one from 12-2pm and the other from 2-4 pm. Please sign up here for one of the two sessions. There are 15 slots available for each session.

  • Students are encouraged to attend both sessions, but they are only responsible for presenting in the session they picked.

  • All members of each group should be present to present their poster on the presentation day.

  • If, due to extraneous reasons, you cannot make it to the poster session, please send a mail to the teaching staff explaining your reasons why you can't make it. If we find it acceptable, you can present in an alternate time slot from noon to 1pm on Tuesday March 21 in Packard 264. You don't need to print out the poster, just bring your laptop.

  • Only the student who cannot make it on Thursday need to present on the alternate time slot; the rest of the group still need to present on Thursday. If the quality of the presentation is significantly different, we reserve the right to give different grades to different students in the group.

  • Students should set up their posters from 11am to noon, for both sessions. Atrium is available starting at 11 am. No setting up of posters from noon to 4pm. Poster easels will be provided.

  • The size of mounting boards are 40 inches x 30 inches. Our recommended poster size is 36 inches x 24 inches.

Guidelines for creating a good poster:

  • Convey the big picture ideas; details and equations can be left mainly to the report.

  • Use figures rather than equations.
